~Sound as Healing~
Have you ever stopped to think about how the sounds around you affect you, how they make you feel?
Are there certain sounds that immediately make you cringe or put your back up? Are there certain sounds that make you feel light-hearted and cheerful? Are there certain sounds that make you feel relaxed and even sleepy?

Music is an easy example of how different sounds can affect our moods. Notice how you use different music for different things or tasks, perhaps upbeat music playing while cleaning your house or exercising, and how listening to your favourite song can make everything feel right for a moment?
Some music can make you happy, some can make you sad, others can make you anxious (think of the music in horror movies), others can make you feel angry.

Sound is very powerful, and very influential over our bodies and minds. Feelings, thoughts and emotions create a reponse in our bodies, they activate the production of specific chemicals. For example oxytocin is produced when we feel love, happiness and safety, or cortisol is produced when we feel stressed, overwhelmed, or worried and afraid of something.

We are bombarded with sound/frequency/vibration at all times whether we realize it or not, and those sounds/frequencies/vibrations are all having an affect on us, again whether or not we are aware of it.
Becoming conscious of the sounds that we are exposed to on a regular basis gives us the power to make adjustments were we can to introduce and influence a healthier sound environment in our surroundings for better health and overall well-being.
Sound healing is a beautiful ancient modality, that can assist in bringing our bodies, minds, and energies back into wellness, harmony, and balance. Sound has been used as a tool for healing for thousands of years, our modern western construct has more recently been recognizing and acknowledging sounds validity in the arena of healthcare. Western Healthcare currently uses ultrasound as a diagnostic tool, and studies have shown success using specific sound frequencies in killing cancer cells.

One example of healing with sound in days gone by can be traced back to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who utilized sound as a form of medicine to treat a variety of aliments. Research will uncover many other examples of long used sounds to aid in healing.

As a therapist I use crystal singing bowls as my primary tool in my sound healing therapy, combined with compliments of, drums, rattles, chimes and my own vocal toning.

The sound frequencies generated from crystal singing bowls, drums, rattles, chimes and vocal toning work to clear energetic blocks within the body, enabling the body to heal trauma and illness. These sound frequencies stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system which down regulates an overactive nervous system, and in response actives healthy chemical production in your body. These frequencies also slow down brainwaves, shifting you from a more active brainwave state (beta) to a more relaxed dreamlike brainwave state (alpha), facilitating a deeper state of consciousness and an unplugging from the hyperactivity experienced in our daily lives. This allows one to reconnect with themselves and gain perspective of what's going on within and without. As the parasympathetic nervous system and alpha brainwave states are sustained ones perspective widens and capacity for life in general expands.

Sound therapy is effective in achieving relaxation, down regulating the nervous system, moving through energy blockages in the body, treating stress, anxiety, high blood pressure, depression, sleep disorders, physical and emotional pain to list a few.

Our body, mind, and spirit hold the energetic imprints of all of our experiences. The sound vibrations in a healing session have a way of shaking things up, they can induce a sense of bliss one moment, and then perhaps a feeling of unease the next. If these feelings arise it's happening because the environment is promoting and supporting a release. Clients are encouraged to simply breath through any more challenging feelings, with gentle breathing techniques to allow release of any discordant energy that is ready to be dislodged and processed.
The experiences in sound healing sessions vary greatly form client to client, and also from session to session, from gentle and relaxing, to the opposite end of the spectrum of deep profound emotion release. Sound healing has it's divine way of delivering to the client what they need most in that moment.
Sound healing is powerful and truly moving.

What to expect during a sound therapy session:
You will be laying down pillowed and under blankets for the session, wearing an eye cover to block out light and outer distractions. You will be instructed with breathing and visualization techniques, and then immersed in sound vibrations from the crystal singing bowls. At the end you will be gently guided to come back to the present moment and space, and given time to begin integration.
